Real ID Deadline and European Visa Requirements

 In Clinical Trials, Global Trials

As travelers, we’re excited to share some important updates for U.S. citizens planning future trips. Travel by air, both domestically and internationally, is making a triumphant return to pre-pandemic levels and even exceeding expectations. In this article, we’ll discuss two crucial travel requirements: the Real ID deadline for domestic flights and the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) for those planning to visit Europe in 2024 and beyond.

The Real ID Deadline: May 07, 2025

You might be wondering when the Real ID deadline is for domestic travel within the United States. This requirement has been a moving target due to the pandemic, but the latest update is that you’ll need your Real ID to board domestic flights by May 07, 2025. It’s a milestone that’s approaching, so make sure you’re prepared well in advance.

European Travel Visa Requirement: ETIAS

For those thinking of European travel in 2024, there’s an essential travel requirement to be aware of—the European Travel Information and Authorization System, or ETIAS. This program impacts not just U.S. citizens but also travelers from Canada and other countries. If you plan or need to visit any of the 30 European countries participating in this program, you’ll need an approved ETIAS visa.

The Application Process: Easy and Accessible

Thankfully, the ETIAS application process is designed to be straightforward and accessible. You can fill out an electronic form on the ETIAS website or via the ETIAS mobile application. To complete your application, you’ll need your passport and an electronic method of payment. The expected cost is 7 Euros, with exemptions for minors under 18 and individuals over 70 who can apply for free.

What Information You’ll Need to Provide:

When applying for ETIAS, you’ll be asked for various pieces of personal information, including:

  • Full Legal Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Home Address
  • Phone Number
  • Email Address
  • Passport Details
  • Education and Occupation Information
  • Details about the countries you plan to travel to and any past countries you’ve been to.

Approval Process and Timeline:

Once you’ve submitted your application, you’ll receive an email confirming that it’s been received. The approval process can take anywhere from a few minutes to four days. It’s crucial to note that travelers must have an approved ETIAS to be permitted into Europe.

Important Reminders:

A specific launch or effective date for ETIAS has yet to be announced and the latest update says the launch has been postponed. However, once implemented European Union officials strongly advise travelers to apply before making any travel, accommodation, or other plans related to their European trip.

ETIAS will be electronically linked to your passport and will be valid for 3 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. If you obtain a new passport, you’ll need to apply for a new ETIAS as well.
